About — Cedar Compass

Cedar Compass is a personal journal of learning, growing, and making. It is a place to keep the encounters that stay with me, and to explore what they bring to mind.

Sometimes I learn from a book or a conversation; sometimes from a tree beside the road, or an attempt that goes differently than planned. Small experiences like these can make the familiar look new and help me understand myself a little better.

Growth rarely announces itself. Often it begins as a root reaching quietly through the dark.

These pages hold discoveries from reading, the uncertainties of growing, and the experience of making something of my own. Some questions remain open. I hope they are still worth sharing.

May these pages offer something like light through the trees: never choosing the road for you, only making it a little easier to see.

A note on cedar

True cedars belong to the genus Cedrus, native to the mountains around the Mediterranean and the western Himalayas. They grow slowly, then spend centuries widening into a canopy of remarkable calm. The cedar of Lebanon arrived in British gardens in the seventeenth century; the deodar followed later, taking root in estates, parks, and campuses across Western Europe and North America.

Across centuries of Western culture, cedar has gathered meanings far beyond its botanical life. Its fragrant, durable wood built temples and appeared in ancient texts as an image of dignity, longevity, and steadfast faith. In North America, “cedar” also names native trees such as western redcedar. For many Indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest, these trees have long provided the material for homes, canoes, clothing, and ceremony—an abundance that has earned them the name “Tree of Life.”

In literature, cedar often shelters memory and all that cannot easily be spoken; beneath its branches, shadow and light are never far apart. Cedar Compass draws from this wider field of meaning: roots reaching down, a crown opening skyward, and a quiet place where a traveler might rest long enough to recover a sense of direction.
